I didn’t get home from work in time this evening to watch the network news, so I didn’t see what latest daft release came from the White House or El Presidente’s Twitter account. He Who Must Not Be Named (HWMNBN) hasn’t yet been in office for a month and I’m already almost completely worn down mentally from the constant stream of absurdities from him and from his staff. I’m 61 and, in the immortal words of Major Kong from Dr. Strangelove, “Well I've been to one World (sic) Fair, a picnic and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I even heard come over a set of earphones.” Come to think of it, I’ve done all three of those. The ’64 World’s Fair was so cool it took at least a couple of visits.
For the past two years, I’ve lived in a very conservative area of southern Oregon after living for decades in the Bay Area. HWMNBN is not an overwhelming favorite hereabouts but he did win the county in the general election. It’s weird to live in such an area and it’s weird to live in a country with a president who didn’t win the popular vote and won’t admit it.
I watch the weekly broadcast of Prime Minister’s Questions from the U.K. on C-Span. Last week, Speaker of the House John Bercow said he was strongly opposed to having HWMNBN address Parliament during his state visit later this year. Bercow is one of three parliamentary officials who must approve any invitation for someone to speak in Westminster Hall, the venue typically used for grand occasions of state. By the way, if you don’t watch PMQ, it’s sort of like watching political debate in a pub. Very entertaining.
Members of the Parliament are scheduled to hold a debate on HWMNBN’s extremely controversial state visit. The debate, which will be held in the House of Commons on February 20, comes after a petition calling for the invitation to be scrapped attracted over 1.6 million signatures. Demonstrations took place across the U.K. Monday with thousands turning out to protest against HWMNBN’s potential visit in which he would be expected to meet Queen Elizabeth II.
I’m glad to see that the growing resentment and outrage against HWMNBN and his gang of goons is not confined to the U.S. We have had marches and other forms of protest in this country but it can’t stop. We’re fortunate to have such easy technological access to our elected representatives. Up this way Wyden, Merkley, and Walden have heard from me and will continue to do so. If you can spend time on social media, you can spend a few minutes to urge your representatives to support or oppose actions by HWMNBN.
